Fields of Noise

Erwin Jeneralczyk

The term noise is a vague and relative term, often used interchangeably to describe a wide range of contexts. It can be asociated with chaos or coincidence. It can also mean a distortion of the message, an information overload that brings a disturbing noise.

Fields of Noise are the result of transdisciplinary research related to the semantic branches of the concept of noise. The artist consideres them primarily in cybernetics and neuroscience areas, but also philosophy and contexts embedded in contemporary art. He draws on a variety of research methods and tools oscillating between the training of neural networks and the practice of field recording.

Both the video piece and the sound material emerged from a curatorial process that involved the training of artificial neural networks by the artist. The process was based on attempts to “explain” to the algorithm the characteristics of an object found in a forest. It is one of several elements of the work that, using the dialectic of information and interference, explores the relationship between the external world and our subjective experience of it.

The artist works in the field of intermedia practices. A frequent theme of his works is the dialectic of noise with signal. The works are transdisciplinary in approach, with references to scientific contexts, primarily embedded in neuroscience and cybernetics, being an important part of them. He treats computation and working with data as a creative medium, and his works are often placed in the areas of generative art and sound-art.

He has received scholarships from the Minister of Culture and National Heritage and the rector of Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow. He has presented his works and activities at the MOCAK Museum of Contemporary Art, the Cracow House in Nuremberg, the Wawel Royal Castle, among others.
